About UiTM Green Centre (UGC)
UiTM Green Centre (UGC) was established to champion sustainability within Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The UGC’s overarching objective is to coordinate all green initiatives, activities, and innovations towards a sustainable and eco-friendly campus ecosystem. This mandate aligns with UiTM’s Strategic Plan 2025 (Strategic Theme 8: Smart Campus), underscoring the university’s commitment to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In essence, UGC aims to “uphold the sustainability agenda of the university, community, and the world by embedding sustainable practices in campus operations, academics, research, and community engagement. Key goals include reducing the university’s environmental footprint, promoting sustainable lifestyles on campus, and elevating UiTM’s global visibility in sustainability. All UGC’s efforts are geared towards transforming UiTM into a model green campus and a reference point for sustainable development in higher education.
History and Background of UGC
UiTM’s sustainability journey predates the formation of the UGC. In 2018, the university established a Sustainability Committee and launched the “Greenation@UiTM” initiative, marking a new era in advancing the sustainability agenda. This period saw various ad-hoc green efforts coalescing into a more structured program. Building on this momentum, the UiTM Green Centre (UGC) was officially approved on 21 October 2020 by the University Executive Meeting (MEU 34/2 2020). UGC was placed under the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) as part of UiTM’s 2020–2025 strategic plan, with the explicit purpose of driving sustainability across the university’s operations, community, and global outreach.
The establishment of UGC solidified UiTM’s commitment to sustainability. It signaled a shift from isolated projects to a coordinated governance structure. Early accomplishments included UiTM’s improved standing in sustainability rankings and the formulation of official policies. For instance, UiTM introduced a comprehensive Sustainability Policy in 2021 (approved by the Board of Directors on 24 September 2021) to integrate SDG principles into all facets of university management. UGC’s creation thus provided leadership and focus for ongoing efforts from campus greening and resource efficiency to sustainability education ensuring these efforts were sustained and aligned with national and global sustainability frameworks. From its founding, UGC has become the key driver in transforming UiTM into a “sustainable green campus”, coordinating university-wide initiatives under a unified vision.
